Its game day in Columbus, Ohio. That special day that happens every two years when Ohio State hosts "that team up north". In 1968, having just scored a touchdown and leading by 34 points, Woody Hayes decided to go for a two point conversion. The try was successful and Ohio State won 50-14. When asked why he went for two points, Woody replied "because we couldn't go for three."
There will be 100,000 people in the stadium and another 100,000 milling around campus. I will be in the latter group. I am going down with my youngest son to watch the marching band rehearsal/team walk through and then to one of the theaters to watch the game on the movie screen.
Ohio Stadium is located about 200 yards east of the Olentangy bike path. So I decided to do a stadium run this morning. At 5:20 there were two scalpers, one band member and a concessionaire cooking hot dogs and bratwurst. I considered stopping for a Brutus dog, but I still had 11 miles to get back home and I didn't know how well it would sit. By the time I got home the contents of my water bottle had turned into a slushy (mmm...slushy perpeteum). Anyway, 19 miles on the bike path and 3 miles through the neighborhoods; I'm hangin on.
I did my 22. I was dragging last night on the treadmill and it started out the same this morning. Except that every time I broke into a run I had to go to the bathroom. Weird. I thought this would be my last day in the running. I got tired of looking at the walls, and it had warmed up to 45 degrees outside so I walked to the park and ran on the grass. By the first mile I had to go to the bathroom, so I took a mile detour to Walmart. While there I got some cheap gloves, another knee strap, shoe inserts, and a 6 oz. Hershey's bittersweet chocolate. It wasn't very good. But after that I was able to 12 miles straight, getting home in time to go to a German craft fair at the German club on our Army post (Fort Bliss) with my parents. They had Christmas goodies, cakes, crafts and decorations, bratwurst, mulled wine, and beer. Two beers later the folks dropped me off at Costco and I ran the last 4.5 miles home. El Paso is kind of a dump, but there is sunshine and gorgeous blue skies nearly every day. Today is the first high-mileage day I've finished up before sundown. It feels real good.
Started with 11.5 through the snow in, out and around the Cuyahoga Valley National Park with some SERC runners. It felt like 15 but 2GPSs confirmed it to be slightly more than 11.5. All the snow and running with the Godale brothers always seems to make the runs harder. Later I closed down the fitness center with running 6.5 more on the treadmill. Had to come home & finish with 4 walking on the home treadmill. I now seem to be walking more than the others.
