"Long may you run.
Long may you run."

I am tapping out. I started to develop some shin splints on Friday night. I made it through the Saturday morning run ok, but by the afternoon and evening I was doing more of a hobble rather than a run. It is no better this morning and there is no way I could make it through 30 miles. So I am calling it a good month and plan to rest for a couple of days.

Mike, a big thank you for oganizing this and moderating the board. It really is a unique event and has been a most memorable journey. I hope you have the time and inclination to put this on again next year.

Erik, keep at it, its just one more mile. I will be watching with a mixture of awe, envy (that you are still running) and relief (that I can get a little more sleep).

Long may you.

Great job, Ted!

I'm impressed w/how far you made it, and more impressed that you are going to be smart and call it good this late in the game.

Done. Tomorrow I'll drive to the beach and walk 1.5 with my elderly friends.

No Mike, I've never done ultras, and my last marathon was about 4 years ago. I think I ran less than 50 miles last month. Yes, I would consider 31 miles tomorrow, but not for less than $200 bucks.

Ted, nice job hiding your injury till the last day. I hope you get over it quick.

I started the morning by losing my $1 pedometer and doing some boring up and backs on the beach. People tell me it's 2 miles, but if I can run it in 13.5 minutes, it ain't no 2 miles. Then I headed south on the peninsula and was passed by a pack of wild runners. I thought I could get some inspiration by following the bouncing ponytail. It worked, and I was able to keep up with them for over 8 miles, even at an occasional 7 minute pace. The leader showed me the hidden mile markers, so I may not need that pedometer again. Another guy said the GPS watches were about $150 at COSCO. Next year. I finished up back on the beach for 18 miles. In the afternoon after getting over my exhaustion, I ran 9 on the rocky, hilly trails in Florida Canyon, Balboa Park before visiting my friend recovering from bypass surgery. After a couple of hours he told me it was time to for me to finish running. I did the last 3 in Tidelands Park.
No pain, except the balls of my feet from the rocky ground. Blisters are all gone. NB 892's did fine (I bought 5 pairs at different Big 5 store sales). I lost a few pounds, even though I was forcing myself to eat. I had a ready excuse when I wanted to leave an event. I got some respect. I think I'll try some other monthlong goals.
My one good decision was not to run on hard surfaces. That and lining up my days off for the end of the month. And limiting my alcohol -- I didn't really have time for it the past 2 weeks. If I had run on asphalt and concrete, I would have dropped out by mile 20 with plantar fasciitis, shin splints, knee/ankle/hip pain.
Thanks for the memories guys.
DaveP that was a pretty funny comment.

Erik,

Does done mean "done with the challenge?" I know you said you would do 31 for 200 bucks, well THAT is what is on the line...Josh and I have pledged to double the total going to charity if a runner makes it 31 miles...

With 9 runners entered x 20 dollars = 180 plus Don Baun's generous 20, we are at 200 dollars even and your run would make me and Josh cough it up to 400.

No pressure, especially not from my bank account, but that IS WHAT IS ON THE LINE. :)

I will definitely be putting this challenge up again next year based on the poll results....same month...

Also, I will put up the "Ten....More....Miles! Challenge" soon, whereby runners can do the same thing, just adding 10 miles to their long run each month of 2009, starting in January.

So let me know if you are officially tapped out. You will be the winner either way, and I need your home address for your prizes from Vertical Runner and the contact info to your charity if you can to make it easy for me to get them the check. You have my personal email address I think, send it there.

I will send out the checks early this week and then scan and post the receipts from the two charities as soon as they each come in.

My host here in San Diego just got home from the hospital (4-bypass). We've been there all morning, so I'm getting a late start. 1 mile on the beach this morning, 29 to go.
Josh, I'm trying not to let you down.

Not Done Yet.
